Spirit Guides. They are energies I talk about a lot. I converse with mine (and my clients) ALL THE TIME. Why? Because it is their job to help your soul accomplish its purpose. And because of that, they know you better than you know yourself. They were with you before you were born, and some of them will be with you after you die.
That being said, unless you are clairvoyant or clairaudient (and even then) it can be hard to know they are around. Guides tend to speak in a whisper of metaphors and signs that if you aren’t looking, can be missed. Additionally, it can be easy to ask when bad things happen or when situations don’t play out the way you had hoped – “Where are you?”
I know that doubt and cynicism all too well. I have seen it. I have lived it.
Most recently I’ve watched a dear friend struggle through it. She had been through a rough patch. But through grit and hard work has gotten herself on a good path. She has a good, steady job. This job afforded her the ability to purchase a beautiful car that she’d always dreamed of. And most recently, she was able to purchase a home of her own.
The only thing missing from her life was love.
Her guides indicated through readings that it was coming. Additionally, she could feel it in every bone of her body.
Knowing the clearer you are with your guides, the easier it is to help you accomplish you goals. She and I discussed tips on how she could work with her guides. I encouraged her to make a list of all the qualities she desired in a partner. She did that. She was also encouraged to ask her guides for specific signs to let her know she was on the right path. She asked them to play a song whenever the person was near with the agreement that whenever she heard it, she would get in the car and go to the place that was in her head at the moment. She even asked her guides to help point the person out by having them wear a particular color.
Day by day she prayed to her guides and trusted them wholeheartedly. She went out of her comfort zone and followed the signs that her guides continued to give her. She also took the time to listen for them. She even learned the Tarot to enhance that connection.
She did everything she was asked to…. and yet, her person didn’t come in.
Finding herself in the same place she started, she came to me frustrated and angry. Doubt ran through her, and she indicated she felt like a fool and was having a hard time believing any of this was true.
At that moment I knew there is nothing I could say that could bring her peace. Words of encouragement and have faith only go so far. The proof really is in the pudding and the only thing could bring that is Time. Because, I truly believed her guides were still working on it.
A month later (and seven months after starting her search), she met her person. This individual was everything her guides said they’d be. Everything that was on her list. The song had played and there was a hint of the designated color. My friend’s guides did what they said they were going to. It just took longer than expected.
And when I saw her again, after she had met her person, she was smiling ear to ear telling me her frustration with her guides was a thing of the past. She now understood why it took the time it did – not everything was lined up sooner. After she began dating her person, she found out that they were not emotionally available at the time she started her search.
Hindsight is ALWAYS twenty twenty.
So next time you feel like getting down on your guides, try to have faith that they are working on it. And remember, that once they start plucking that the spider web there are many moving parts that need to be arranged that it just takes time.
So give them a break. Give yourself a break. And maybe a glass of wine!

I’m not ashamed to say, I call on my guides to help me with EVERYTHING. They are my BFFs and they NEVER let me down. While I was pregnant, I discovered they were particularly good at helping me get parking spots.
Towards the end of my pregnancy, I was doing anything I could think of to assist my little girl in making her entry into the world. Per my midwife’s advice, this included A LOT of walking. My husband and I would walk the neighborhood, stores and the malls. When we’d be out someplace, we learned quickly that it was important to get a spot as close to the door as possible. Not because I had a problem getting in, but by the time I was done I was really done and trekking across the parking lot wasn’t going to happen.
So I would ask my guides for help. And, they always got me a great spot. The most notable was one evening at about 5pm when we decided to stop at Wegmans to pick up a quick dinner. As we drove into the parking lot, immediately I thought, “Are we sure we want to do this?” the lot was its usual crazy mess. Perfect time to ask my guides for help… so I focused on the Expectant Mother spot and asked my guides to open it up for us.
As we approached it, not only was it open… but the cart boy had blocked it with the carts he was collecting to bring back to the store. Soon as we got close, he moved the carts as if ushering us to our spot. My guides definitely did some good work that day!
They’ve also lent a hand when they aren’t asked. While in Rochester about a month ago, my husband and I were debating over what to do for dinner. It was 10pm, I’d just gotten out of a house party and both of us were hungry. Unfortunately because it was almost 10pm, our options were limited. We really didn’t want fast food and wished we knew where a Wegmans was as that would allow us to pick up a quick bite and grab food for the psychic fair that weekend. No sooner had we spoken those words when we came up over a hill and rounded a corner and like in the movies we saw the lights of a Wegmans beckoning us. Thank you Spirit Guides! Especially since it was at about that time we realized we had missed a turn AND coincidently the turn to get us back to where we needed to be was the corner the Wegmans was sitting on. If that’s not divine intervention, I don’t know what is!
I don’t know what I’d do without my guides. While they don’t make my life perfect, still waiting on those lottery numbers, they do make life a little easier. And in moments like these, bring a smile to my face.
If you aren’t using your guides already, when are you going to start?
My grandfather often spoke of “Indian Guides,” otherwise known as spirit guides. According to him, a unique Native American spirit was assigned to each individual to protect and assist us down our life’s path. As a child, my “Indian Guide” was Chief Joseph.
Chief Joseph is a Native American spirit who appears to me dressed in jeans, and depending upon the day a black cowboy hat or full head dress. As a rule, he never said much. And, from his post at the front door of the home I grew up in, he protected me and my family ensuring only the highest and the best entered the home.
Chief Joseph was a kind spirit and I found much solace in his presence and honored him with offerings of gemstones and tobacco. Perhaps for the offerings, or the recognition of my gift and vulnerability, he took a particular liking to me (then again who wouldn’t??). I don’t, however, believe he was my guide. My guide, Clarissa, (perhaps named for the television program “Clarissa Explains it All”) is a whimsical, fairylike presence with a strong goddess-like energy. Because she is not Native American and my grandfather insisted our guides were Indians, for a long time I did not recognize her as my guide. After his passing and when I began to study with other teachers, I realized the reason my grandfather referred to guides as “Indian” was because that’s what his was! He only knew from his experience! Clarissa, was indeed my guide.
So who, you may be asking yourself, is Chief Joseph? And, why was and is he around? Until the early 1850’s the land upon which my childhood home was built was part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation. On rainy and stormy nights, if you listen closely the Native chants and drums are audible on the winds. And, it is my belief that Chief Joseph is a Seneca Indian charged with protecting the sanctimony of the sacred land. Since I have left home, I no longer find him within the four walls of my mother’s home, rather he slowly walks the land offering prayers.
To him I am forever grateful. He protected me even though he didn’t have to. So although he may not be my guide, he is my hero.
