DNA Testing: Could You Be Opening Pandora’s Box

1/14/2020

Picture
You’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard about Ancestry.com or similar companies that conduct DNA testing to track one’s heritage. Ads for the companies are prominently featured on broadcast television, streaming channels, and even on Amazon and FaceBook. Not only that, television programs like Dateline, 20/20, Dr Phil and even the news have done expose`s on how DNA testing has united families and been responsible for solving cold cases.

As a psychic medium, I often find myself in unique and sometimes problematic situations. You see, my friends ask my opinion when trying to make decisions, big and small. I bounce ideas off of them as well. That’s what friends do, right? Where I find myself walking a fine line is that I find my friends consider my opinions more than others and even their own due to their perception of my connection to spirit. They sometimes forget I’m just Dawn. I don’t always get it right.

2020 - A Roarin' Good Time?

1/1/2020

Picture
It is hard to believe that 2020 is here! While perhaps not as profound as New Year’s Eve 1999 when many worried about a Y2K Armageddon or as curious as December 2012 when the Mayan calendar came to end, but it has been a year many have hoped to see change in. When I worked in healthcare reform, Healthy 2020 was a powerful initiative. Those goals may or may not have been achieved, but 2020 offers the opportunity for change. Politically, we will likely see an emotionally charged election. Personally, you have the opportunity for magic.

Why do I feel 2020 will be magical? Let me tell you why!

Ghosts verus Guides

Picture
As I tell each of my clients, “As a medium I connect with both your loved ones and your guides.” Children, as uninhibited intuitives, experience both type of Spirit as well.

Let’s take my daughter as an example. If you saw the Facebook Live video of my daughter and the ghost friend she picked up at a local restaurant, you know she sees ghosts. In the video, she was talking with him and you could even see her continuously glancing over at him.

It was apparent to me, because of how he presented in hologram form, that this was a Ghost. In this Blog, I’m referring to a Ghost as a Spirit that had recently taken a human or animal form. I’m not making a differentiation between Earth Bound spirits and those that have crossed into the light. That’s a topic for another Blog. For those not familiar, in short an Earth Bound spirit is one that chooses to stay on the physical plane whereas the Crossed spirit resides on the spiritual plane or “heaven.”

These types of spirits are not the only spirits children have interactions with. Kids also interact with their Spirit Guides (or Guardian Angels). Again, let’s use Baby Girl as an example. She started talking about Roland a few months ago. At first he was a little boy, but over the weeks and months he has also appeared as a bunny and a dog. He is her guide.

How do I know he is her guide? Again, it comes down to how the energy presented itself to me. Unlike the Ghost from the restaurant that I saw in hologram form, I have only felt and seen Roland as light. Additionally, unlike the Ghost which I perceived at the same moment my daughter did the Guide I didn’t perceive Roland until I heard her talking and tapped in. Why? Because her Guide is hers and part of her free will.

You may be thinking, “That’s great... for YOU, but unlike you I don’t SEE spirit. How do I know what type of spirit my child is seeing?” Lucky for you, I’ve got a few ways you might be able to differentiate between the two.

Appearance
Ghosts always take the same form. The form the Ghost takes is typically the same physical form he or she had during his or her life. If the child sees the spirit as an older woman, the spirit will always be an older woman. Whereas a Spirit Guide is a more advanced spirit and is not limited to its physicality, the form changes form to fit the needs of the child in the moment. If the child needs a protector, the spirit may appear as a super hero whereas if the child needs a companion the spirit may appear as a dog. What is important to note, despite the form the Guide takes the child will always recognizes the spirit. This explains Roland’s appearance as a little boy, bunny or dog and my daughter continues to call him Roland.

Details
Children will describe Ghosts using very realistic details. For example, the ghost may be described as having blonde hair and brown eyes. Why? The Ghost, again, had a human (or animal) form and this is what he or she presents to the child. On the other hand, a child may describe their Spirit Guide (even if they are saying it is a little boy or older woman) with unrealistic descriptors such as having blue polka dot skin or wings. In my daughter’s case, Roland can shrink down to the size of a thumb. He shrinks so he can be put in her pocket and go with her wherever she goes.

Frequency
Ghosts appear less frequently than a child’s Spirit Guide. Ghosts, like a grandmother or good friend, pop in to say hello but are not around all the time. Spirit Guides, like parents and siblings, live with the child. As a result, it is not uncommon for the child to interact with the spirit on a daily basis.

Familiarity
Children tend to be more familiar or comfortable with their Guides. These spirits do not tend to frighten a child. For one, they appear in a form that is warm and nurturing to the child. Secondly, just like a child turns to his or her parents for comfort because he or she has been there since birth. A child turns to his or her guide in the same way. Ghosts (even the friendliest of them) may frighten the child. They are, after all, strangers.

Pay attention to these details, and you will find it is easy to tell if it’s a Ghost or just a Guide.

3 Explanations as to What is Really Happening

Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned. Such was the case with my California adventure. If you read this Blog, you know I was excited to be going out to California to speak at the Holistic Chamber of Commerce National Conference scheduled for October 20th and 21st with a meet and greet on the 19th.

Plans change. On October 12th, exactly one week before the conference was scheduled to kick off I received a call from the President of the Chamber informing me that the conference was cancelled. No clear reason, just that it was off.

My first response was anger. With plans to arrive in LA in less than a week, the pricey flight and hotel arrangements were nonrefundable. So now not only had I invested a lot of money to attend but I was also I taking a week off during what is traditionally my busiest month AND I had already spent a good amount of time preparing for my role speaking and facilitating a conversation on blogging.

Once the initial frustration settled, I was baffled. Having assisted in the planning and execution of several multi-day conferences that each featured more than 30 speakers and brought in over 400 attendees, I could not wrap my head around HOW a conference of this scale could just be cancelled. Having planned conferences, I knew that at a week out there would have been expenditures that were non-refundable, such as venue deposits (if not the entire expense) to swag to keynote speaker fees. Not to mention the process of refunding (and explaining the situation to) the sponsors.

While trying to wrap my head around why the organization would make that decision was hard, I could see reasons. But where I REALLY got stumped was the universe’s motivation. The speaking engagement was not something I actively sought out. It was an opportunity that seemed to fall from the sky in my path. And for some time, all I could ask was, “Why?”

In response to that question, I have three answers:

The first is my husband’s take. He thinks it boils down to FREE WILL which he explained in the following way:

“Dawn, perhaps you were supposed to California and speak at the conference. Perhaps there were people you were supposed to meet and network with. But remember you are only one part of the equation, there are many parties involved and those parties have free will. Others decisions will impact you and they may not always be listening to their intuition or their highest and best is different.”

The free will in this case was that of the HCC’s President and her judgment as to whether or not the conference should occur. Perhaps the universe had aligned for me to be there and the universe assumed the conference was a go…  and then it wasn’t.

That is one, potential. My friend has another idea. She suggested that I GOT THE MESSAGE BUT I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND THE WHY. Her thought of the why is that I just needed a vacation and this was the universe’s way of giving it to me. Perhaps the universe knew I wasn’t just going to take one so the universe was tricky and arranged it so that I would.

Both my husband and my friend made good points. And, it is completely possible that one or both are right. But I have a third option. I believe that there is something – perhaps a brief conversation I had with someone while there or someone saw my information in the advertisements for the conference or something I’m not even aware of – that will create an opportunity for me down the line. When we live our life by Spirit, the outcomes are not always a clear cause and effect. Rather, sometimes we cast our line and wait for the fish to snag the worm. It might be that day, a week or perhaps years later… but it connects somewhere.

So for now, I enjoyed my vacation and I am waiting.

Is the Medium Talking for Your Loved One or Is She Just Talking?

10/11/2017

Picture
I met with a client recently who was really struggling with his loved one’s passing. When I met with him, he had researched life after death extensively. He’s read books and accounts of near death experiences. He’s spoken to several mediums. And, he has listened to many TED talk debates between scientists.

Unfortunately, all this research has left him more confused and uncertain than ever...

Don't Trust Me, See for Yourself

Last weekend at the Happiness for Your Health Expo a young girl, curious about psychic coincidences yet at the same time incredibly skeptical, asked me if what I do is “real.” I love teenagers and young adults, because they don’t have the same filters adults have and will ask me blunt questions like this which results in an amazing dialogue.

Listen for the Message

10/4/2017

Messages come in all shapes and sizes, you just have to be listening and paying attention. This past weekend I was reminded of this.

It was before the Happiness for Your Health Expo. I had arrived early to set up and was glad I did as it scored me an end spot! Once I was set up, more vendors (and all their merchandise) began to stream in which caused me to feel a little claustrophobic. Feeling crowded...

3 Tips for Overcoming Ascensionitis

I love being a medium and feel blessed that I not only recognize but also know how to apply my intuition. I also believe YOU, yes YOU, are also a medium. The motivation for normalizing mediumship is two-fold. Selfishly, the mother in me wants my intuitive daughter to live in a world that embraces her gift. The humanitarian in me wants everyone to utilize their intuition because it makes life easier and more fulfilling.

Unfortunately, while connecting to one’s intuition makes life “easier” in the long run, it isn’t always a comfortable ride to get there. It can, and often does, hurt!

Taking a Leap of Faith

Last week I received a reminder of the upcoming Holistic Chamber of Commerce  conference in Manhattan Beach, CA. While the conference was appealing because it advertises and will provide tremendous content that I could apply to my business, I did not intend on attending. California is quite the hike!

But when I heard my phone buzz and saw the reminder e-mail, something caused me to click the link to find out more. Perhaps it was because I had twenty minutes to kill before my next client arrived. Perhaps it was the curiosity to see who they had added to their speaking line up. Perhaps it was the universe prodding me. Whatever it was, I clicked the link.

A Visit from Daphne & How to Let Your Kids be Intuitive Kids

In my book, I talk about Cara and her intuitive daughter, Paige. Paige connects with her deceased grandfather and uncle (and even her uncle’s favorite poochie!). These interactions make Cara uncomfortable as the details she shares regarding these family members is alarmingly accurate and leave Cara uncertain how to respond.

There are many open-minded parents who find themselves in these situations. When asked, I always tell them to be inquisitive and supportive of their child’s gift. Most importantly, don’t be alarmed, frightened or give any indication to the child that their interaction is abnormal. Easier said than done I realized when I recently found myself in a similar situation.

It happened the other day while my daughter and I were cuddling before bed, she pointed at my t-shirt and said, “Da-fin.”

When Things Go Bump in the Night

9/13/2017

Picture
During the autumn months, my phone rings off the hook with people looking for readings and advice regarding how to deal with things that are going bump in the night. This never surprises me as I wrote in this Blog, the “veil” is thin. In the fall, it is easier for Spirit to communicate with us causing people to fear the paranormal activity they are experiencing (advice calls) or have a greater desire to communicate with their loved ones (increased readings).

I know all this. I expect an increase in calls. I expect my “waiting room” to be more full. I even expect to see more Spirits when I am running errands. What I don’t expect is for more “bumps” in the night IN MY HOUSE. But, that’s exactly what I’ve been experiencing recently.

It all started a few weeks ago...

6 Ways to Improve Sleep & Avoid the Back to School Blues

9/8/2017

Picture
While I get teary eyed over the thought of my daughter entering pre-school (she starts next week), many parents are giving a collective sigh of relief that their kids are going back to school. Summers are filled with fun and excitement with carnivals, road trips and late nights. All of this activity disrupts a family’s routine and by the end of summer, the lack of routine can be uncomfortable (hence the excitement for the beginning of school).

Unfortunately, getting back into a routine with the start of school can be a challenge. The new school year and its accompanying afterschool activities such as sports and homework have people going rushing from place to place. Until a family gets back into a routine, this chaotic energy is uncomfortable for all individuals. It is especially uncomfortable for those children sensitive to energy.

As intuitive (all) children go back to school, parents often see behavioral changes such as disrupted sleep, outbursts, exaggerated fears, etc. Because of this, during this time of year I get calls from parents looking for assistance. Several friends have already asked!

Being asked has always been strange. My daughter has never been to school so as a parent, I have no recommendations. Not only that, I’ve been blessed in a couple ways where I haven’t had to cross that bridge. For one, my daughter has always slept through the night. Even as an infant when she was nursing, I would get up, feed her and she would fall right back asleep. The whole process took no more than 15 or 20 minutes. And being self-employed, both my husband and my schedules are flexible and allow her to follow her own routine. We don’t have to hustle in the morning to drop her off at daycare or a sitter before going to a nine to five job. Rather, we can let her sleep until she wakes up as I’ve arranged my schedule to accommodate her. I don’t see clients until the afternoon, so there is no rush in the morning.

I realize, however, my friends and clients don’t ask me my thoughts because I’m a parent. They ask me because I’m a medium. And in many cases, they have tried the recommendations their mom friends and even health care providers have offered and they are still struggling. So as a medium, my recommendation is always to balance the child’s energy. The best way to do that? Get a good night’s sleep. I know this can be easier said than done, but here are a few tips that can help.

  1. Bright Spots – Before bed, have your child recount three good things that happened to them during the day. For example, he or she could have gotten an A on his or her spelling test or he or she could have scored the winning goal. At least one item should be something he or she did for another. For example, he or she helped his or her teacher and got a gold star. By recounting the highlights of the day, he or she will be less likely to go to bed worrying about a situation that didn’t go his or her way or about an upcoming test or game. Without the worry, his or her ego will have less problems to resolve and as a result they will sleep sounder.
  2. Quiet Time – After being on the go all day, it is important to allow one’s energy to settle. This can be accomplished by reading a book, doing yoga or meditating using simple (remember they are kids!) breathing techniques. These activities quiet the child’s body which in turn quiets the child’s mind and allows the child to more quickly fall asleep.
  3. Routine – If you have routines, keep them. For example, every night when my daughter goes to bed see gets a cup of milk and we sing the song from Three Man and a Baby. With both of those, she immediately goes up to bed. In fact, when she is tired SHE will start singing the song. Routines trigger a behavioral response as documented by Pavlov and help an individual fall asleep. Because of this, it is also helpful if the bedroom is only used for sleeping.
  4. Lavender – If your child (or you) still has a hard time falling asleep after the first three tips, my dear friend makes a smudge spray, Sweet Dreams, which I and her clients swear by. While there are several oils within it, the dominating oil is lavender which is a calming herb and known to assist with sleep. If your child (or you) are having trouble sleeping, spray some lavender on your pillow or sheets.
  5. Hematite (or any other grounding stone) – Intuitive individuals tend to travel in their sleep. A grounding stone, such as hematite, near where you rest your head at night will limit the amount of dreaming you do. This will allow the physical body to rest more fully.
  6. Remove Clutter – A messy space impacts the sleep state because subconsciously you still have a chore (clean up) left to do. With that task on your mind, it can make it more challenging to sleep.

Hope that helps! Good luck as the school year begins!!

Not an Astrologer, But Why I Follow Astrology

9/6/2017

Picture
Tonight there will be a full moon. If you follow my Facebook page, you know that I routinely post articles about astrology, usually around the full and new moons, mercury retrograde and eclipses. I’m not an astrologer, so why do I post about it? Simply stated, astrology is AMAZING. The pull that the alignment of the planets exert on us and the impact these forces have explain many positive and negative interpersonal interactions as well as circumstances that arise in our lives. For example, astrology explains why my husband and I get along so well – we are both Aquarius. It also explains why we had issues closing on our house in 2010. At the time, mercury was retrograde. We ended up signing our closing papers the day after mercury went direct. Coincidence? I think not!

You may now be asking, if astrology explains so much, why haven’t I become an astrologer. There are several reasons…

For one, I’m lazy. Astrology is a science. Understanding one’s zodiac sign, let alone the rising and moon signs, is just the beginning. When I picked up a copy of Alan Oken’s As Above So Below, a book to learn Astrology 101, it was over 300 pages with VERY tiny print, I realized astrology may not be for me. Astrologers (good ones) have spent hours training to not only understand but also apply the concepts of astrology. I was, and am not, prepared to put the hours into learning this skill.

Not only am I lazy, I believe and have witnessed how the alignment of the planets impacts each individual and humanity as a whole, I have a stronger conviction that each individual has free will. Our destinies ARE NOT written in the stars. One CAN and often DOES overcome the pull of the planets. The reason I never went deeper is I know I am susceptible to placing too much emphasis on the power of the planets and forget that I, and ultimately you my clients, have free will.

So now you may be questioning, “If you fear relying on astrology too heavily, why do you follow it at all?” It’s simple. I know the planets will have an impact on me whether I believe in it or not. This is evident every mercury retrograde when my husband’s phone is ringing off the hook. He is an IT consultant, and like clock-work, every mercury retrograde his clients have trouble with their computers or network and need his help. Do his clients know that mercury is retrograde and that technological troubles are a known disturbance that occurs during mercury retrograde? Nope. Are they being impacted? The phone calls speak for themselves.

Since the planets are going to have an impact, I feel it is important that I know what is going on astrologically. Especially since I have found that astrological events tend to have a greater impact on energetically sensitive or intuitive individuals (like myself). Being aware of the astrological occurrences allows me to prepare for both the positive and negative. Most importantly, I CAN and often DO use the alignment of the planets for my benefit. In fact, so can you!

How do I use these energies to my benefit? Let’s take tonight’s full moon as an example. I’ll be placing some of my crystals out in the moonlight. This allows them to soak up the positive energies emitted by the moon. I will also make sure I find time to meditate. Just as the full moon brings light through the darkness, meditating during this time can also help an individual find clarity. Lastly, I may smudge my office or house. Full moons are a great time to clear out old energy – who knows, since it’s garbage day I may even find myself doing a little bit of purging.

Since I’m not an astrologer, I’m uncertain of the specific energies of this full moon… so there are more things I could do to tap into this energy that I’m missing. There are some great astrologers out there that could tell you more. I encourage you to keep your ears open, and I’ll keep posting!

Back Again!

8/30/2017

If you’ve been following this Blog for a few years or you’ve binge read my postings, you’ve read “Psychic Fairs.. Not What You Expect.” In that posting from a few years ago, I shared why I decided to take a break from the psychic fair scene.

Prior to that time, I like had participated in psychic, metaphysical and holistic events to promote my business. It is what I did and I encourage any aspiring medium or healer to do. Working the fair circuit is the most effective way to establish yourself as a reader or healer as it fosters credibility and facilitates name recognition. If you haven’t read my prior blog, you may now be asking “why did you quit?” I needed to shift my priorities. The fairs are ridden with drama, something I no longer wanted to surround myself with. Additionally, with the birth of my daughter I wanted more time to spend with my family. By not participating in the fairs, my schedule has become more relaxed and structured AND I’ve had time to focus on endeavors such as my book.

Leaving the fairs, in my opinion was the best decision I could have made at the time. Since leaving, I’ve been contacted by many promoters seeing if I would like to participate in their event. Other than a couple charity events, I have declined.

It is because of all those reasons, I find myself filled with trepidation as I feel the tide shifting as I enter into a new phase of business. As I increase my presence as an inspirational speaker and author in addition to a practicing medium, I realized it was time to return to the fair and expo environment I left behind. This past weekend was my first foray back. Fortunately, there are a number of differences this time around.

For one, I’m not trying to break into the holistic field and make a name for myself. I’ve been in the business for ten years. I’m established. This might not matter much to the promoters, the other vendors or the patrons of the event, but it is important to me. Over the past ten years, especially the last three, I’ve proven to myself that I really can have a successful career as a medium. As a result, I’m comfortable and confident in my skin. I’ve got nothing to prove to anyone, let alone myself… which was what I was really doing back in the day.

Due to this comfort and confidence, the competition, cattiness and drama that I have seen accompany the fair circuit is less likely to impact me. For one, I don’t intend on doing the fairs, as many reader do, to make money from readings. Rather, I intend to promote my book One and further my mission of normalizing mediumship. Because I’m not offering readings, I’m not in direct competition with anyone.

More importantly than not being in direct competition with anyone, I have grown to a point I don’t really care what other people think of me. I KNOW there are and will be people who don’t resonate with me or my message. I’m OK with that. I don’t have to win over everyone. The only person I have to win over and that has to be ok with me is ME. I have to live with my truth and my actions. Realizing this, has made such a difference. I just have to be me!! What is easier than that?

Because of these realizations, my entry back into the fairs was more fun than I expected. I look forward to sharing the message of One further.
