Each year hundreds of thousands of people make cemeteries a tourist destination. They visit the Pere-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris to see the grave of Jim Morrison; they stroll through the spooky Highgate Cemetery in London reliving their favorite horror films; in New Orleans people go to the St Louis Number 1 Cemetery to see Marie Laveau’s tomb and trinkets hoping to win her favor; and here in Western New York, people go to Forest Lawn cemetery to take in Frank Llyod Wright architecture and stroll the quiet grounds. Cemeteries bring an incredible peace. But, they carry a stigma and, as such, bring a thrill. That stigma - “Are cemeteries haunted?” The answer (in my opinion, mind you) is a loud and resounding NO. Well…. MOST of the time they’re not.
However, I understand people’s fear of cemeteries. They are where we put our loved ones remains as their “final resting place.” We go there with flowers and to “talk” to our deceased loved ones. Additionally, in horror films the dead are depicted crawling out of the grave and lonely spirits are shown wandering between the gravestones. So there must be Spirit, in cemeteries right? WRONG!
Cemeteries are really quite quiet and peaceful. I realized this when I was about four. My grandfather had taken me and my two older cousins (five and seven) to the cemetery to visit my grandmother. Much to my grandfather’s displeasure, we were goofing around in the back seat of the car. When we wouldn’t quiet down, my grandfather got a brilliant idea. He stopped the car and kicked me out telling me; “If you have so much to say talk to all the spooks in the cemetery, look around, there are plenty that could listen. They don’t have anything better to do anyways.” My cousins’ jaws dropped when he shut the car door on me and DROVE AWAY. Now, I’m sure he didn’t go far. I was probably within eye shot the whole time and although it felt like forever it was probably only for a couple minutes. But can you imagine doing that today? CPS would be called! I get off track… back to my point. As I was standing there alone in the cemetery, a little frightened, I realized something… I was ALL alone. And I wondered, where were all the spirits?
After my grandfather came back for me, I was a little sheepish (and proud) so it was a few weeks before I asked my grandfather my question. His response, “Why would they want to hang out there? Cemeteries are depressing. Will you want to hang out in a cemetery when you’re dead? I know I wouldn’t… I’m going to come and haunt you!”
He made a good point. And, it has been my experience he was right. About all aspects… He sure doesn’t hang out there, he is definitely my Casper.
So at there you have it, that’s why cemeteries aren’t haunted. But as I mentioned earlier, that’s most of the time. Which means there are some occasions when there IS spirit activity. One of those times occurred this week - Memorial Day! Over Memorial Day, whenever passing a cemetery (especially military ones) I hear bugle horns and see seas of soldiers in military attire paying their respects to their comrades.
Why are cemeteries busy over Memorial Day? The same reason cemeteries see an influx of living visitors over the holiday. Spirits go to pay their respects just like we do here. Something that is important to remember, when we die we continue to live and continue to grow. Hence our actions over there are very much like they are here. So it should come as no surprise that cemeteries are busy on Memorial Day. And, since Spirit’s activities mimic those of people here… just as fast as the cemetery got busy, they have quieted down. Until next time…
Last week I met a dear friend and her two daughters for lunch. Her daughters are five and eight. They are intelligent, precocious, well-mannered little people. And, as you can probably expect, they are TALKATIVE.
Both are intuitive and they honored me by sharing their stories. At one point, the older of the two was giving my husband and I a complex explanation of her “people,” including where they reside both in her head and in ‘heaven.’ Unfortunately, with the attention shifted to her, the younger one began to pout and become withdrawn. Noticing this, her mother engaged her by saying “Hunnie, what’s wrong?” Without skipping a beat the older one said, “Momma, I’ll get Tilly (one of her people) to diagnose her.”
My jaw dropped when I saw what happened next.
A wave came over the little girl and she announced she was “Dr Tilly.” With her mannerisms and an impeccable southern accent, I swear she was channeling Mammy from Gone with the Wind! I literally did a double take. An actress couldn’t have pulled off the change in character so smoothly or so quickly.
Just as quickly has she had slipped into the personality, she shifted out of it. Back as the little girl who had been talking about her people moments before, with great articulation and sophistication she shared the diagnosis Tilly had come to… the little one was jealous. This was resolved and the conversation continued on through a lovely meal and dessert.
On our way out, I couldn’t help but ask my friend the transformation I had witnessed in her daughter. I was also grateful to hear that my husband, having seen the same thing was just as astonished. Having experienced it before, she hadn’t given it a second thought (you better believe she is now paying close attention now!!)
After seeing this and hearing other friends describe their kids as doing the same thing (one has a little New Yorker and another has a Scottish lad), it makes me wonder: “Are these transformations those of past lives or are they from the children’s guides?” And, “Are they harmful?”
Thinking about it, it probably doesn’t matter whether it’s a past life or a guide. And, it’s unlikely they are harmful. From my experience, children often find comfort, insight and support from these energies. I always urge parents to encourage it. (Check out My Kid Sees Sparkles for more on that!)
On a side note, I can’t wait to see what personalities Baby Girl channels. Who knows, maybe she’s already doing it!
One of my favorite things to do is observe how others work with and perceive Spirit. I love to quietly watch individual’s auras morph and a glittery rain (that’s what it looks like to me) wash over them as they connect with Spirit. I do this in the classes I facilitate, mediumship demonstrations at the Lily Dale stump or Spiritualist churches I attend, and when I have a free moment at the psychic fairs I participate in. It is a beautiful sight that makes me teary just thinking about it.
While watching this energy, I’ve often thought it would be awesome if mediums were to get together and bounce this energy around while passing messages. Being a visual person, I imagine it to look like a laser light show that Disney would put one. It’s something I’ve personally never actually seen done, and to be quite honest doubted it ever would be. You see, as a general rule mediums tend to work alone. One, let’s be honest every medium (myself included) has a little bit of ego and who wants to be out shined by another medium! And two, and probably the bigger reason is that during mediumship training many instructors (at least in the traditional sense – I tend to go rogue here) tell you DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PIGGY BACK. Bouncing the energy around could be considered piggy backing, hence by many would be considered a big no-no. Well, Spirit apparently doesn’t think it’s a no-no, because they have recruited a blonde, a brunette and a ginger to do just that. Are you afraid? I’m not... maybe that’s because I’m the brunette.
You may be saying to yourself, “Am I missing something? I don’t get it.” Well, here’s the scoop. A little more than a month ago, Lily Dale Medium Celeste Elliott (the redhead) reached out to Reverend Kathleen Boldt (the blonde) and myself to see if we would be interested in collaborating on a project (or two or three). Both are very talented mediums that I have a high regard for, so I jumped at the opportunity. At our first meeting at a Panera Bread, we chatted and laughed and after all that decided to host an event, Catch the Spirit, on May 29th. This gave us only about two months to get it planned, and there was lots of work to get done!
And get it done we have. At this point, the event is only a little more than two weeks away, and let me tell you, it has been an interesting and fun ride. We each bring different skills and personalities to the table. For the past two years, I’ve been self-employed and the only three people I’ve really had to answer to have been my husband, Baby Girl and Spirit. So working with two strong, intelligent women has been invigorating and given me a different perspective. We all need that every now and again!
With such a short time frame, it’s been nerve wrecking. Especially since this is something none of us have ever done before, nor have we seen it done! But, we trust Spirit who keeps telling each of us – “Don’t worry! You’re going to be great!”
To lessen our nerves, we decided to practice on our friends and family. Oh what fun it was!! And interesting as well. Kathleen, Celeste and I are each trained differently and have different delivery styles. It was amazing to see how we were each able to complement one another, a few tweaks will need to be made… but overall, it was exciting. It stretched me beyond my comfort zone as I found myself channeling the energies. My guides were definitely right when they have sung Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up, as I truly felt that around the two I was “more than I can be.”
So we have some tweaks to make for the 29th… and I’m sure between now and then my nerves are going to be a roller coaster. I’ll just keep reminding myself, that ultimately how an event goes is up to Spirit. I will condition myself to be the best medium I can be, but Spirit is the star and the director. Fortunately, Spirit has NEVER let me down.
Want to see the three of us in action? Come out on the 29th! More information can be found here.
People often treat me as if I am special because I’m a medium. Well folks, I have something to share with you. I’m really not that special because EVERYONE (yes that includes you!) is a medium. Where I differ and am lucky is that I had a family that nurtured the gift so I had an ability to strengthen the “muscle.” Also because the ability was cultivated, I recognize when I’m tapped into Spirit and when a message is coming through. Something many “normal” people forget to do.
That was the case a few weeks ago with my aunt. She had watched Baby Girl while I was working. Before she took off, we took the opportunity to catch up. During our conversation she said, “You know I’ve been thinking about your friend Jen A LOT recently. Is she pregnant? Let her know I want to be invited to the baby shower.” At the time, she wasn’t pregnant. Or.So.We.Thought. Not a week later, I received a text from Jen announcing she is PREGNANT!! Appears my aunt, who claims she’s not a medium, might be more tapped into Spirit than she thinks!
You might be thinking. OF COURSE your aunt would pick up on something like that. The “gift” runs in the family. So try this one on for size.
My stepmom, Terry, and father visited last week. If you’ve read my Blog, One of My Biggest Fans, you know that while Terry is very open minded, she is also very conservative and definitely not the person you would likely consider “psychic”. Well, while she was here we poked fun several times saying, “Terry, YOU must be psychic.” This occurred the evening we were trying to decide what to do for dinner and I said, “how about pizza?” Her response was, “I was just thinking how great Buffalo pizza would be.” It also happened the day she said she should check in on her dad, but hesitated before calling because she had the thought he would be out with her sister (even though it wasn’t on the calendar). Sure enough when she called, she didn’t get an answer and later found out he was out with her sister! So while we joked, it was apparent to me that she was using her spidey senses.
In both cases, neither my aunt nor my stepmom realized they were receiving messages or connected to the universal consciousness. They took it has an educated guess or assumption. Something I hear from my clients all the time. They’ll tell me, “You know, I think I’m intuitive. But how do I know for sure?” I often feel like saying, “DUH! Everyone is intuitive. Just trust it!”
Trust is, unfortunately, easier said than done. Especially when we are taught by society to seek concrete facts, not to jump to conclusions, and the messages received aren't the booming voice of God. Rather, the messages are intangible, subtle gut feelings, internal conversations and fleeting thoughts. It is those things you need to pay attention to and trust. THEY ARE THE MESSAGES! The more you recognize them, the clearer and louder they will become. Remember that being a medium isn't just seeing Spirit, it's so much more. It's about you!
