But when I heard my phone buzz and saw the reminder e-mail, something caused me to click the link to find out more. Perhaps it was because I had twenty minutes to kill before my next client arrived. Perhaps it was the curiosity to see who they had added to their speaking line up. Perhaps it was the universe prodding me. Whatever it was, I clicked the link.
But, something in me kept saying, “APPLY!” And despite trying to dismiss it, there was a tug from deep down inside. You’ve probably had that feeling, when logically you can’t make sense of the desire, yet you can’t shake it. What you want (or perhaps don’t) just seems right in the moment.
Since it’s what I preach, I decided to listen and fill out the presenter form. It was an easy form and it didn’t require a lot of information. In fact, at the time I had NO IDEA what I would talk about or how I would fit in. But, I told myself, “I’ve got nothing to lose.”
Off the form went. It was a Thursday. Being late in the week, I didn’t expect to hear anything that day or even the next. But because the conference is only about a month away, I figured if I was going to be accepted I’d hear Monday. When I didn’t, I figured I wasn’t the right fit.
But when I least expected it, 5pm (2pm Pacific Time) on Tuesday I got a phone call from the President of the Holistic Chamber of Commerce. I was playing with my daughter so I missed the call, but in the message she indicated she was interested in having me come out to the conference and share my experiences. Then within the hour I received an e-mail with additional information.
I couldn’t believe it was happening. I’d applied on a whim! A WHIM! When I shared the exciting news with my best friend, she replied, “Dawn it might have been a whim for you but it wasn’t a whim for the universe. It knew what it was doing.”
And you know what, she is right. The universe has been preparing me for the next step… both personally and professionally. Personally, it was less than a month ago I told my husband I wanted to go to California in the next year or two to take our daughter to Disneyland. Turns out I didn’t have to wait even a year! Professionally, I have been reintroducing speaking engagements and events. This is just the next one. And admittedly, it is a small role. I will be a Interest Group Leader talking about and facilitating a conversation about Blogging. I'm excited to see where this takes me.
Moral of the story – Next time you have that desire, that whim, that INTUITION, LISTEN to it. You never know where it may take you. For me, it’s taking me to Disneyland and opening up a whole new market in California and beyond.
