One in particularly bad reading that stands out was an experience I had while in college. It was during my freshman year at Spring Fest. I remember it being a beautiful sunny, and warm spring day. My friend Nicole and I were excited when we wandered into the campus center for lunch and saw the college had hired a palm reader for the festivities. We thought it would be fun to see the future was in our hands.
In retrospect, I feel for the lovely lady who was doing palm readings that day. She was placed at a high top table in the middle of the busy campus center. No one was there to check in on her to see if she needed water or direct traffic; and the line to see her was a mile long. And despite being early in the day, many of the students in line (myself included) had already been drinking and were a little loud and rowdy. None of which fosters an ideal environment for a reading.
Nicole and I were excited for our reading, as were many of our friends who were ahead of and behind us in line. In fact, we waited almost an hour for our turn.
Many people walked away with smiles on their faces. Some with confusion. And then I got my reading and got a glimpse of what my future would hold.
When I got up to her, she barely greeted me. But I proudly presented my hands to her. She covered the typical topics of Love, Career, Money and Health. With little emotion in her voice, this is what I heard:
LOVE: “Looks like you have already met the love of your life and lost him.”
CAREER: “You’re always going to work hard – that’s who you are – but, you’ll never be successful or get ahead. You will always be working for someone else’s glory.”
MONEY: “You aren’t going to have a lot of money. Don’t worry, you won’t be poor. Rather you’ll always have just enough to pay your bills, just not enough for luxuries. As a result, you’ll always find yourself wanting for more.”
HEALTH: “You are going to live a REALLY long life and will be physically healthy for most of it. <insert sigh of relief here… finally something good. UNTIL> Despite that, you are going to be severely depressed throughout your whole life. You might even find yourself in and out of mental institutions.”
When she was finished she dropped my hands and moved on to the next person in line. I didn’t know what to say, except “Thank you?”
Being a believer in the fates and destiny, I believed there was validity in the information she shared. Because of that belief, I walked away from that reading feeling hopeless and dejected with the question, “What did I have to look forward to?”
That day, I told myself I had to look forward to getting drunk and having a good time. I did and by the next day, in my hungover stupor, I began to put the reading behind me.
But, I never forgot it.
Over the years, I have had several realizations that help me come to terms with what I consider was a terrible reading from years ago. I wish to share some of these with you.
A reading is a snapshot in time and like a picture only captures a moment. This was evident in the palm reader’s message to me about love. At the time, my long term boyfriend and I had just broken up. The break-up had devastated me. Her message of love was affirming what I already believed to be true and perhaps was true, at the moment. I am happy to say that I HAVE found love again.
Which leads me to the second realization, Circumstances Change. Upon learning a little bit about palmistry, it surprised me to find out that lines on the hands change. As a result, the outcome can be a moving target.
How do circumstances change? FREE WILL. You (and I) ultimately have control over what happens in our lives. We are not puppets whose strings are being pulled and where the world is acting on us. We are putting our desires upon the world. This became apparent to me after my car accident. At that time, I thought the prediction about health and being depressed my entire life was coming true. I, however, decided that was not going to be the case. Perception makes a huge difference.
Finally, know that every reader has their perception as well. As I mentioned, the circumstances of the reading were not ideal. This could have led to an otherwise warm and fuzzy palm reader to deliver negative, blunt and sarcastic messages due to feeling overwhelmed or perhaps even annoyed with us discourteous college students. Everything is through a particular lens.
So next reading you have, be it good or be it bad, remember these things. It might just lead you to a better outcome.
